3. Safety in NYC
I am sure you heard stories about some parts of NYC being dangerous and all but the true is NYC can be dangerous no matter where you at, so you always have to be alert and precautions. New York City is a very strait up town, people are usually very nice but not polite, you get it once you move there.
4.Renting a place
Getting an apartment can be tough in NYC unless you are rich.
- First apartments are expensive
- Second you need to have a job in order to rent an apartment unless you have a guarantor
- Third you have to good to excellent credit.
- In order to rent a place in most places you are going to need a broker who is going to charge up to 15% of the yearly rent... Yes is a lot...
Moving in with room mates is my personal advice, but before you commit with anybody make sure they have a lease. They have a job, and that all the bills are being pay on time. Yes I know it is hard to ask those questions but they are very important to ask. I know a lot of stories of people moving in and paying deposits and first month rent to come to their place and find all their stuff on the streets because their room mate got evicted for not paying rent.
6. Get familiar with specials in the area, it would help you budget your money. You may find the chinese restaurants having dinner for $5 on Mondays, or the Bodega (small grocery stores) having egg sanwiches in the morning for a $1... NYC can be very expensive learn to use coupons, buy at dollar stores, ask people and you will see that you can get by as long as you are smart.
7. Some of the beauty about living in NYC are those free concerts, check out Time Out, you can find everything about clubs, restaurants, and events happening in NYC... During the summer there are usually free concerts in Central Park, Battery Park and other locations through out NYC.
8. Don't be afraid to live uptown Manhattan or outside Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, Washington Heights, Inwood, Harlem are all great places to live.... Discover NYC go beyond Time Square, or the Village.
9.Get ready to walk, sometimes is faster getting around specially in Downtown!
10. Jobs... If you want to work you will find work, but remember this is NYC, there are plenty of competition and people willing to do the work for less. So be ready to take a pay cut, unless you are the super best at what you do.
11. If you are moving to NYC before you move LEARN TO LIVE WITH LESS, just bring what is necessary. If you have friends in NYC try contacting them before moving, maybe they can help you.
